(Palynology, Stratigraphy)
My palynological research focuses on the responses of land vegetation and phytoplankton to environmental and climatic changes, the causes of such changes, and on stratigraphic problems. I work with fossil pollen and spores from land plants, marine dinoflagellate cysts and acritarchs, and freshwater algae. My current research concentrates on the Cretacaeous-Paleogene of Antarctica and southern South America, including the Cretaceous-Tertiary boundary, the Neogene of Antarctica, and the Permian-Triassic of the Transantarctic Mountains. I am also involved in collaborative research on the Neoproterozoic-Cambrian of Bolivia/Brazil and coeval successions elsewhere in the world.
I received my B.Sc.(Hons.) and Ph.D. (1976) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand, then came to the Institute of Polar Studies, The Ohio State University, as a Postdoctoral Fellow and Fulbright Scholar. I held research positions at OSU (1977-1980), Colorado School of Mines (1980-1986), University of California at Riverside (1986-1994), and returned as a Visiting Associate Professor to Ohio State in 1994. I joined Byrd Polar Research Center in 1995, have set up a Palynology Laboratory, and also teach undergraduate and graduate courses (including an 800 seminar "Methods and Applications in Palynology" with Stephen R. Jacobson) for the Department of Geological Sciences. I also do palynological consulting in Precambrian through Tertiary rocks worldwide.
