PhD Opportunity in Remote Sensing and Modeling of Glacier Dynamics

Funding is available to support a PhD program with a research focus on observing and modeling the rapidly changing behavior of large, fast-flowing glaciers in Greenland, Antarctica and Alaska. A wide range of remote sensing data will be used to constrain analytical and numerical models of ice flow with the objective of improving predictions of glacier and ice sheet stability under possible future climate forcing. There will also be opportunities for field work.

The ideal candidate will have a strong undergraduate and/or masters-level background in physics, mathematics and/or computer science with some research experience in the form of an undergraduate or MSc thesis.

This program will confer a PhD in Earth Sciences from the Ohio State University's School of Earth Sciences with tuition and 12-months/year of salary support provided by a Research Assistantship from the Byrd Polar Research Center. Located on the Columbus campus of Ohio State University, the Byrd Polar Research Center is one of the premier centers for Cryosphere research in United States. Students benefit from interactions with field-leading researchers studying a wide range of topics, as well as state-of-the-art facilities.

Applicants should email a resume or CV with a brief summary of research experience and interests to Dr. Ian Howat
